A Chamber of Missy

Exhibition Description

No human being can be free from the theme of desire.

Desire has not only been the driving force of mankind’s life since the beginning of mankind, but it has also made the biggest changes in development and evolution. However, as mankind progresses, desires have also mutated into far more diverse and bizarre forms than ancient ones. Sometimes even the bizarrely twisted mutation of desire is called the strong side of life. Yoonji Lee wants to focus on this pervading desire. In addition, she aims to enhance the dichotomous way of thinking that separates desires into categories of normal and perversion in our social structure, which is obsessed with the top.

Yoonji Lee focuses on Moe Chimera. [‘moe’, a popular cultural pattern commonly used in Japanimation, derived from the Japanese word “moeru”, meaning “burning” and referred to as “enthusiastic element”. Among the “Moe Element”, not only elements that refer to appearances such as “Black hair”, “Loli” and “Bobbed Hair”, but also characteristics such as “Tsundere”, “Dumb”, “Megadere”, and “Yandere” are included in the Moe Element.] Just as chimera means a monster mixed with various animals such as lions, sheep, horses, and snakes, many elements are excessively clustered together to create a scary and unpleasant creation and called it “Moe chimera.” The exhibition was intended to visualize the excessive mixing of elements in the many moes in which human desires were projected, that is, the monster born of desire through the moe chimera. In particular, this exhibition starts with curiosity about what Missy’s room would look like if she existed, assuming the moe chimera “Missy”. The room is a very secretive and only place where you can see your personal life. Through a glimpse of the living space of Missy, who represents the collection of desires of Otaku cultural enthusiasts, we want to throw a topic into our lives, where we live between reality and ideals, and between the summit and abnormalities of large and small categories. By embellishing the virtual female moe chimera’s room on the border between reality and ideal, and maximizing the audience’s experience of exploring the corners of desks, beds, and secret diaries, visitors will experience the process of finding their own answers through clues (object and text).
