A very small, hard mouth
Exhibition Description
<Artist Statement>
Last summer, to overcome the flatness that stood out in my paintings, I decided to learn wood carving. Wood carving takes more time to complete than painting. In addition, patience is essential because it is harder to change with physical acts compared to painting. I don’t think I’m a patient person but surprisingly I enjoyed wood carving. While I have a lot on my mind when I paint, I feel more peaceful every time wood is shaved off. The process of carving was similar to eating food. It cuts food, and the tongue carries cut foods at the same time. This process has to be very straightforward. If I think about something else, I get hurt. I may enjoy those tensions as well. If you dig in little by little, you feel like you’re digging a tree as if you’re an animal with a very small, hard mouth.
In any case, it seems that there have been many changes in the way I actually perceive objects. I tried to look at all the things I had seen before in pieces, and I enjoy it so much. So, I am enthusiastically observing the world again.
