Be okay
Exhibition Description
Gasamrojieul hosts a special exhibition titled “Be okay” by Kim Min-soo, who calmly portrays small scenery. In this exhibition, the artist presents everyday paintings from March 2020 to the present. The artist said that, having spent an unimaginable time, the concept of a “repeated day” disappeared and that every day approached strangely. Rather, she began to take a closer look at the trivial things she had not normally noticed. A cup of water that she drinks in the morning, a table with food and junk on it, a common gesture from people, etc. She slowly looked at the figures that had disappeared as soon as she saw it, and captured them into the paintings. Kim Min-su, who has a knack for concise yet warm portrayal of everyday scenery, will provide an opportunity to think about the importance of everyday life.
<Artist statement>
The year 2020 that I imagined last winter was an exciting and amazing world. However, contrary to my expectations, it became a tense and uneasy year, and as I couldn’t do much, all I could do every day was to “draw.” The reason why I watched objects and space again, which were always similar, was because I felt stuffy and unfamiliar with the object I encountered every day. As I recorded the small things in paintings, I was connected to more places than I thought. And I could stay in a different space even at a moment when I couldn’t move through pictures of the near past or stories of my friends. I just liked the moment I was looking at, so I drew it focusing the most on the current sense of seeing something rather than personal feelings or thoughts. I hope these paintings will comfort those who live the same time as me.
This exhibition is included in the Art Week-Euljiro Walking Course hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
