side by side
Exhibition Description
After long postponement due to Covid-19, ‘side by side’ gathers seven artists, capturing complex daily lives through child-like imagery. Featuring cartoon-like drawings, reimagining landscape, and developing non-edible delicacies, each artist provides a way to communicate intimacy that resonates with the theme of recalling personal history. Using personal history that is relatable and informative to their viewers, the artists push viewers to reimagine and remember their own experiences that make them connected individuals, they remind us of the strong ties in our lives that help shape us.
Gummies is a pop-up gallery created by founder Jennifer Kang in October 2019. The idea of pop-ups began in New York 2007 when space was limited for artists. Due to the lack of art community, Kang initiated gummies gallery as a way of making meaningful relationships with other artists. From one day pop-ups to events around the world, gummies intend on providing opportunities for emerging artists to foster warm relationships that remind us why we are in it together. This is gummies gallery’s first exciting exhibition in Korea as Gummies exhibited with New York and Chicago before. After contemplating the next move, Kang longed for her motherland, Korea.
Wanting to discover her mixed cultural background, Kang excitedly approached six other Korean and Japanese based artists to gather ‘side by side’.
‘Side by Side’ shares the memories and complex daily lives of seven artists through child-like imagery. By reimagining landscape and space we once grew up in, developing non-edible delicacies, and self portraits, each artist provides a way to communicate intimacy. We are connected individuals as we reimagine our lives through our personal history, reminding us of the importance of strong ties in our lives.
Gummies excitedly awaits for the collaboration with Gasamrojieul as Gasamrojieul is an intimate artist space in Euljiro, run by three artists who ‘converted a 40-years-old office space into a gallery.’ With a history that can be traced back to the 1940s, Euljiro is where the old and new coincides, where artists come side by side.’
